How to Choose the Perfect Wi-Fi Router

The key to a connected home is the connected space. An intelligent device without the radio communication functions is just a normal old device! Some smart devices communicate via Bluetooth, but most connect via Wi-Fi. Therefore, the wireless router is one of the most important components of a smart home.

Sometimes your ISP offers to rent a router. Usually it's a bad deal. You can often save money by buying your own router. Continue reading to find the right router for your home.

router speed

There are several classifications of router speeds, called 802.11 followed by a letter. The WLAN speed ranges are as follows: a -> b -> g -> n -> ac, where "a" is the slowest and "ac" the fastest.

If you are looking for a new router, be careful with the 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g routers. These routers have been obsolete for a few years and if you do not get them for a dollar less, they are not worth the money.

802.11n routers reach 300 megabits per second and 802.11ac routers can reach speeds in excess of 1300 megabits per second. Remember that the maximum speed you receive depends on the internet service you pay for. Most modern homes do not have access speeds in excess of 300 megabytes, so you could buy an 802.11n router. However, if you want to be future-proof, you should buy the 802.11ac router so you can configure it for many years.

Dualband vs. Single band

Many routers offer dual-band functionality such as 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. Single-band routers only provide 2.4 GHz signals. If you have lots of peripherals or really need the extra speed, opt for the Dual-band router. If using your router is modest, you can save money and keep the unique band.

Extenders and mesh networks

If you have a big house, you may need to buy Wi-Fi extensions. These devices can amplify the signal and reach other parts of the house. I recommend installing your new router first to see if you need extender.

If money is not an object, you can buy routers with mesh network technology. These routers work together automatically to create a powerful Wi-Fi network. The technology is mainly used in commercial buildings, but now it is becoming more accessible to the consumer. However, mesh routers can be very expensive.
